Airline Pet Rules

If you are traveling for an extended period of time or enjoy having your pet with you, you've probably considered taking your pet along when you travel. Fortunately, some airlines accommodate pets on their flights, but there are a few general guidelines you should know about before flying with your pet.
  1. Pets In Cabin

    • For flights that are fewer than six hours in duration, most airlines will allow pets to fly in the airplane cabin. The main exception for this is in the United Kingdom, where pets are not allowed to travel in the cabin at all. For most airlines, you are only allowed to take one pet and there is a maximum of two pets allowed in each cabin.

    Container

    • The pet container requirements for pets traveling in the cabin vary from airline to airline, but there are a few general specifications. The container must fit under the seat and have a waterproof bottom.

    Cargo

    • Some airlines also allow you to transport animals as cargo. Though the cargo area is pressurized and the temperature is controlled, it is required that your pet is able to withstand temperatures lower than 45 degrees. You will need to provide a certificate from a veterinarian stating that your pet is able to withstand this temperature upon baggage check-in. Your animal cargo must not exceed 30 pounds and your pet must have an adequate pet crate that is suitable for cargo travel.

    Other General Specifications

    • If your pet is traveling as cargo you must have water and food bowls attached to the inside front door of your animals pet crate. The crate must also have ventilation on all four sides, a live animal sticker on the top and sides that is at least 1 inch tall, and the crate must have proper identification of the pet and the owner's information.
