Holiday Parking Regulations in New York City

Before driving in one of the five boroughs of New York City, become familiar with the strict regulations pertaining to parking. New York City´s Department of Transportation (DOT) designated 34 legal and religious holidays in 2010 with a different set of regulations than at other times of the year.
  1. Holiday Parking Rules

    • Holiday parking regulations in New York City are similar to standard Sunday rules, as per DOT. The driver finds more flexibility in securing a parking space, as alternate side of the street parking is suspended during assigned holidays.

    Additional Perks for Holiday Parking

    • Metered parking is not in effect and as a result, parking at a meter is free of charge. Stopping and standing are also permitted in areas that at other times are prohibited.

    Double-Parking

    • It is illegal at all times, regardless of other holiday parking regulations to double park in New York City. By doing so will incur a ticket and fine.

    Fire Hydrants

    • Never park near a fire hydrant.

You must not park in front or around fire hydrants for emergency access to it case of a fire. The curbs surrounding the hydrant usually have paint as a parking indicator. An auto must park at least 15 feet away from the hydrant on either side of it.

    No Parking Anytime

    • No parking anytime means no parking at all.

Drivers must comply with any parking directive on a sign entitled "no parking anytime" or "do not park anytime." The key word "anytime" pertains to 365 days a year.
