Autumn is a beautiful time to visit New York City. In October, the humidity will have disappeared, the trees are a glorious variety of colors, and the tourists are fewer. New York City can be very expensive, but there are many free sights and activities available in October.
Central Park is probably the most famous park in New York City. Located in Manhattan, it has been the backdrop for many great (and not so great) movies. Central Park offers free guided walking tours throughout the year. Led by knowledgeable volunteers, these tours highlight the history, ecology and design of Central Park. The Central Park Conservancy offers at least 10 tours that cover different aspects of the park. In October, admire the brilliantly colored trees and enjoy the brisk weather on your 1- to 1-1/2-hour tour.
Reservations are not needed for groups with 6 people or fewer.

The Museum of Modern Art, or MoMA, is located in midtown Manhattan and is often referred to as one of the most influential modern art museums in the world. This is a must-see for any New York City tourist, and the MoMA offers free admission every Friday throughout the year, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Take advantage of a chilly October late afternoon and evening to explore the wonders of MoMA.

The Staten Island Ferry might not be glamorous, but it is a free way to enjoy wonderful views of Manhattan's skyline. You'll also see the famous Statue of Liberty during this hour-long ride. Board the ship in lower Manhattan, and head toward Staten Island. The ferry runs about every 30 minutes, so it's possible to incorporate a ride into a busy day of sightseeing. A tip from a native New Yorker: Ride on the very back or very front of the boat for the best views.
