Ireland, as part of the United Kingdom, retains customs regulations that differ from the rest of Europe. When entering the country of Ireland, be aware of a number of items that are limited or cannot be brought past the borders of Ireland. The rules in Ireland are similar to those in England and Scotland.
Ireland does not allow illegal or prescription drugs. Firearms and explosives are also prohibited from entering the country. Customs agents will confiscate obscene goods, such as pornography. Ireland also forbids plants or bulbs and animal products to be brought into the country. This rule includes live animals (aside from dogs and cats), meat, poultry, cheese, hay, or straw.
Your cat or dog travel companions may enter Ireland with special permission. A license is needed to bring your pet into the country and can be obtained with a certification from the United States Department of Agriculture. A clearance form must be filled out by a USDA certified vet saying the pet is healthy and up to date on vaccinations.
Tobacco can be carried through customs in Ireland, but it must comprise fewer than 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars. Alcohol is allowed but cannot exceed 1 liter of spirits, 2 liters of sparkling or fortified wine, 4 liters of still wine or 16 liters of beer. Aside from alcohol and tobacco, no more than 430 Euros worth of goods can be claimed for adults and 215 Euros for children under 15.
