Barbados Customs Regulations

Barbados is a small island nation located in the Lesser Antilles. Although the country is in the Atlantic Ocean, it's frequently associated with the Caribbean, which lies further to the west. The island has one of the most developed economies in the region, and it attracts visitors with its beautiful white sand beaches and tropical climate. All travelers arriving in Barbados by both plane or boat will need to pass through border customs before being allowed into the country.
  1. Import Regulations

    • Travelers to Barbados can bring in some items duty-free. Two hundred cigarettes, 100 cigars or a combination of the two not exceeding 230 grams (or 8.1 oz.) is allowable without paying anything to customs. A 1-liter limit on all types of alcohol is also enforced. Visitors can bring in tobacco and alcohol over this limit, but they will be required to pay customs duties. Visitors must declare all raw plant products, such as fruits, vegetables, seeds and whole plants. Customs has the right to quarantine these items or have them confiscated and destroyed.

    Export Regulations

    • Travelers may leave Barbados without having to pay customs taxes on some items, which include 1 liter of alcohol, 250 grams of tobacco, 60 mL of perfume and $145 worth of other goods. Taking anything above these limits will incur a customs tax. For travelers who are U.S. citizens, the limits on cigarettes, alcohol and perfume are the same, but U.S. travelers may take $400 worth of other items without paying customs. For purchases between $400 and $1,000, U.S. travelers have to pay only 10 percent; after $1,000, U.S. travelers must pay the regular customs duties.

    Health Restrictions

    • Any traveler coming directly from a country infected by yellow fever must provide a yellow fever vaccination certification. This requirement does not apply to visitors coming directly from the United States, Canada or Europe; however, nearby countries such as Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, and Guyana do have documented incidents of yellow fever. Travelers visiting these countries first should make sure they bring their yellow fever vaccination certification to Barbados.

    Visas and Passport Control

    • Whether arriving by sea or air, travelers to Barbados will need a valid passport. Visitors who are U.S. citizens do not need travel visas if they stay for less than 28 days. For longer stays, U.S. citizens can apply for a visa from the Barbados Embassy in Washington, D.C.
