How to Get Back Items Left on Board an Airplane

Traveling can be an exhausting experience. By the end of of a flight, you might feel tired, hungry and rushed to either meet your next flight or get your bags and leave the airport. As you grab all your items, spread around your little seat, you might unfortunately leave something behind. Most unfortunately, you may not remember it until after you deboarded the plane and passed through security terminals. Turning back at that point is prohibited. A quick sequence of events may be your only hope in retrieving the item.

Go to the nearest customer service center of your airline, if one is available. Explain that you have lost an item and provide your flight number. This is especially useful if you have just deboarded the plane and are still in the airport. The customer service department may be able to contact someone at the gate, if the plane has not yet departed for its next destination.

Ask for information at the baggage claim window of your airline. Some airlines send lost and found items to this department. It may be useful to ask your airline baggage department if there is any way they can assist you in this matter.

    • 3

Call your airlines. Connect with their lost and found department. Often, you will be asked to provide your name, detailed flight information, such as your flight number and the date, and a detailed description of the item. If the airline finds your item, a staff member will call you and send you the item.
