How to Get the GST Back

Australian Customs assesses a Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 10 percent on many goods and services purchases in Australia. For visitors to Australia, Australian Customs maintains a Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) that permits travelers to obtain a partial refund of GST paid on many types of goods purchased while in Australia.

Instructions

    • 1

Spend at least $A300, including GST, on qualifying goods in Australia within 30 days of your departure. In order to qualify for a GST refund, you must spend at least $A300 on qualifying goods, which include most consumer goods. Goods that do not count toward the $A300 minimum include GST-free goods, tobacco, consumables, accommodations, car rental charges and goods that do not fit or are prohibited on an airline or ship.

    • 2

Retain your original sales invoice for all qualifying goods. In order to qualify for a GST refund, you must be able to show proof of purchase. If you have purchased goods from a retailer on several receipts, Australian law requires you to ask the retailer to consolidate these purchases onto one invoice.

    • 3

Bring the goods, original tax invoice, your passport and proof of travel with you to a Customs TRS facility before you depart Australia. A Customs TRS facility is available at all international airports and seaports in Australia. Plan on visiting the TRS facility no more than one hour before departure by ship or 30 minutes before departing by plane.

Receive your GST refund. After presenting your receipts and goods, you will be asked whether you wish to be refunded by check, deposit to an Australian bank account or payment to a credit card. If you select refund by check, it will be mailed within 15 business days. If you select deposit to a bank account or payment to a credit card, it will be issued within five business days.
