How to Wrap a Stump

When you're a recent amputee, it can be challenging to adapt to life missing a limb or appendage. This can be especially true when it comes to caring for your stump. Caring for a fresh stump involves wrapping it with gauze and keeping it clean so it can heal steadily. Wrapping a stump doesn't take a lot of time and it can be done by yourself or with a friend to assist you.

Pull the free end of the roll of gauze just above your knee horizontally and hold it in place.

Wrap twice around your knee area, overlapping the tabbed end of the roll once.

    • 3

Bring the roll of gauze around to the back of your leg and bring it downward and around to the front of the stump. Bring it up diagonally to your knee and back around to the other side.

Cross the roll of gauze over the front of your leg, down around your stump in a manner that mirrors Step 3. Repeat this step several times until the stump is wrapped and the roll of gauze is gone. You will need approximately 36 inches of gauze or more.
