When Is a Good Time to Travel in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is a relatively small country, but despite its diminutive size, the weather is quite varied. Understanding the unique climate of Costa Rica, and how it varies region to region, can help determine the best time of year to visit this nation of natural beauty.

  1. December to April

    • December to April is considered the high travel season for many parts of Costa Rica. The North Pacific Coast, home to the beach towns of Coco and Tamarindo, begins its rainy season after April and it lasts almost through the rest of the year, slowly tapering off in November. The San Jose Highlands, Southern Region and Drake Bay Area follow the same weather pattern. The average yearly temperature is 71 degrees. However, during the dry season -- the best time to travel -- the temperature reaches the mid-80s. The San Jose Region also follows this weather pattern.

    April to November

    • Arenal Volcano and the Northern Lowlands have a unique climate profile. The dry season lasts from April through November, making it the longest dry season. Major cities like Tilaron and San Carlos are found in this region. The volcanic region is a popular destination for thousands of students.

    Gulf of Mexico Climate

    • The Gulf of Mexico coastline of Costa Rica has its dry seasons in February-March and September-October. The remainder of the year consists of heavy rainfall and inclement weather. Monteverde is unique in that the dry season there lasts from January to May. Monteverde is one of Costa Rica's most popular destinations. Travel in May to Costa Rica is considerably less expensive then throughout December and April. If you travel in May, weather will still be hospitable.

    Best Time: Weather

    • For most of Costa Rica, the best time to travel is during the months of December and April. A few places extend the season through May while the Northern Lowlands have the opposite season.
