The Best Time of Year to Travel to Italy

Italy draws millions of visitors every year for its food, wine, warm weather and romanticism. Like other countries, there are certain times of year that are better for traveling than others.

  1. Northern Italy

    • Northern Italy tends to have foggy and hot summers, so it is suggested that visitors go there in spring for the best views and weather. Keep this in mind when planning trips to Milan, Verona, Brixen, Bergamo and Asolo.

    Southern Italy

    • When visiting places in Southern Italy, such as Sicily, Puglia, Abruzzo and Calabria, the best time to visit is September. During September the weather is warm and dry, and there are fewer crowds.

    Milan and Venice

    • Larger cities like Milan, Venice, Verona, Bologna and Naples are best to visit in November or March because it is the best weather and the fewest crowds. There are fewer people because it is considered "off season." If you choose to go at this time you will also find the cheapest rates.

    The Alps

    • Those visiting Italy to go skiing in the Alps should visit from December to April. This is the only skiing season. If you visit Assisi or Umbria in March, be sure to check out the Medieval Easter Celebrations.

    Summer

    • When visiting Italy during the summer, beware of the crowds. Also keep in mind that many shops close at the end of August when most Italians take holidays.
