Greece is home to one of the world's most ancient civilizations. Greek concepts such as democracy have influenced much of Western thought. The country has long been a popular tourist destination and continues to attract thousands of visitors each year. Greece enjoys a generally mild climate, and snow is rare. Spring and fall are generally pleasant and temperate; summer is a popular time to visit but often quite hot.
Spring is an ideal time to visit the capital city of Athens and the outlying islands. During the spring, flowers start to bloom and the area's famous hillsides turn a lusher green. Temperatures start to climb, with highs reaching the 60s and 70s in April and May. Many attractions, such as historic churches, are open during the day, and visitors will find most restaurants and museums open. Cruise ships stop at many islands during the spring months. Spring is also a less pricey tourism season, making travel attractive for someone on a budget.
Summer is the most popular time of year to visit Greece, and summer travel offers many advantages. Nearly all attractions are open. Hotel rooms are plentiful. Island restaurants and grocery shops have long hours. The warm waters of the Aegean Sea reach their peak temperatures during this time, making swimming at white sand beaches in clear waters an attractive possibility for even the most reluctant wader. Ferry connections run most frequently during the summer, so visitors will find it easy to island hop at lower cost. One of the drawbacks to travel during this time is the heat; temperatures above 90 are common. This is also the most expensive season. Hotels and other arrangements should be booked well in advance if possible.
Fall is another good time to visit Greece. The days are mild, with temperatures in November hovering in the mid-60s. Greece is less crowded then, yet many attractions remain open and welcome visitors. Fall can be the ideal time if you're interested in historic Greece. You can see many ancient Greek sculptures and other art objects housed in the National Archaeological Museum, and you can visit the many outdoor attractions of Athens, such as the Acropolis. As temperatures drop, the Greek islands are also an attractive destination. Cooler breezes make walking along the shore or the hills less exhausting.
