From late February through mid-April, tens of thousands of students descend on Cancun, both to soak up the sun and the booze.
If you are mainly interested in diving, swimming and snorkeling, visiting Cancun during the less-crowed off season. You can charter a dive boat or rent equipment without waiting, and you will have a geater sense of privacy on the beach and in the water. Restaurants will seat you sooner. At your hotel, you will probably get a sounder night's sleep. Resort rates and airfares tend to be lower.
Severe storms occur regularly in the Yucatan Peninsula from mid-August through October. Although airfares and accommodations are typically less expensive, the savings may not be worth the possibility of a rained-out vacation or, worse, a forced evacuation because of a hurricane or tropical storm.
Late April through June is a good time for families to visit, but May through late August can be extremely hot and humid.
The weather continues to be warm and tropical November through February, when students are in school and families are less likely to be traveling.
