Chicago Events for Children

Chicago is a big city, but it has plenty to entice the smallest travelers, from great museums, a couple of zoos and the original American Girl Place.

  1. Chicago Children's Museum

    • It's one of the premier children's museums in the country, with a multilevel climbing schooner, tremendous water exhibit and a "forest" for kids under 5.

    The Field Museum

    • This is the museum for dinosaur lovers, and includes Sue, one of the largest, most complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossils anywhere.

    Brookfield Zoo

    • This sprawling zoo located 12 miles west of downtown has a playground as well as every major animal.

    Lincoln Park Zoo

    • This free, downtown alternative has a farm and a carousel.

    Shedd Aquarium

    • The attraction located on South Lake Shore Drive has dolphins, beluga whales and penguins, a Caribbean Reef and "Amazon Rising," one of several popular exhibits.

    American Girl Place

    • See a show, have tea, and spend lots of money at their various specialty shops. Dads and boys may feel slightly out of place here.
