Costa Rica is a beautiful country with a lot to offer. It has stunning volcanoes, lush rain forests and amazing beaches. Many Americans and other foreigners retire in Costa Rica because of its low cost of living and friendly people. But if it's work you're after, you'll need to explore many possibilities.
Know what to expect. Costa Rican law states that a foreigner can be given a job only if there are no Costa Ricans available who can fill it. Since Costa Ricans tend to be well-educated and the country has a high literacy rate, there will be a lot of competition unless you are a specialist. English teaching seems to be the most popular job, although there is work for tour guides, biologists, aid workers and environmentalists.
Find out where to look for a job. Start at multinational companies in your own country that have a presence in Costa Rica. They would pay the best. You can also try:
Newspapers and magazines like La Nación, Tico Times and La República. Both print and online versions have help wanted ads.
Online at Latinjobs.com and ticojobs.com.
International recruitment agencies like Adecco and Manpower.
Language schools, especially if you are a native English speaker. JobsAbroad.com and ESLCafe.com have listings, but bear in mind that many of these jobs require you to have a TEFL certificate.
Volunteer. There are many opportunities, and you don't need a work visa to stay three months or less. The most popular way to volunteer is to teach a language and get room and board in exchange. English is the most popular language, but French and German are growing.
You can also volunteer in tourism, through medical internships and by building schools and houses. You can usually volunteer with an aid organization. Check with your country's ministry of foreign affairs.
Get a work visa. If you get a job, your employer must help you get a work visa. They are good for six months and can be renewed for another six. You will need a criminal background check and copies of your diplomas and certifications. These documents and an application must be approved by the immigration and work department.
