Accessible Journeys is a unique travel agency dedicated only to wheelchair travel. Unlike a typical travel agency, the company is aware of the many special needs of people in wheelchairs. The personnel offer mixed group tours for people in wheelchairs, slow walkers and family members or caregivers. Trips include locations such as Alaska, Italy and even the Panama Canal. The agency's "Luxury" experiences include African Safaris, New Zealand and Israel. Equipment rental and companion service is available also.

Thanks to revisions in the Air Carrier Access Act, as of May 13, 2009, all planes departing to or from the United Stated must be accessible. The law now mandates the prompt deplaning of wheelchair passengers before the flight crew departs and at the latest, just after the last passenger has exited the plane. The law also requires a wheelchair storage space of 13 inches by 36 inches by 42 inches, among many other changes. This means wheelchair-bound individuals now fly safely anywhere within the U.S. with confidence that they won't be forgotten on an empty plane; and, if that happens, a lawsuit is warranted.
Cruise ships offer some of the most accessible travel available, but wheelchair-accessible rooms are quickly booked. Keep in mind the Americans with Disabilities Act ensures that American ships are accessible, but foreign-owned ships may not be accessible. This does not mean that all accessibility means are equal, so ask about the width of doors, if the shower is roll-in or toilet-adapted and about the width of the passageways. Other things to look for are the tour destinations, if you plan to explore the stops. For example, Puerto Rico is a popular cruise destination that is partially accessible, except for the tourist attractions. Ask about amenities and events you wish to participate in, such as evening shows or if pool lifts are available.
