Get a passport. You're required to have a valid passport to travel to Japan. To apply for a passport, you must have a completed DS-11 application form, two passport-sized photos, a government-issued photo identification and proof of citizenship. Apply at the nearest passport acceptance facility.
Pick your destination. There are several international airports throughout the islands of Japan. Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya have airports that service international destinations such as the United States.
Buy your ticket. Airline tickets can be purchased online from the airline website or from a third-party discount merchant. Tickets can also be booked through a travel agent. When purchasing a ticket, you'll need to present your passport information and select your seat on the plane.
Prepare for the long flight. A long flight to Japan can be uncomfortable, especially if you're flying economy class. Pack snacks in case you get hungry between in-flight meals. Including a small toiletry kit in your carry-on luggage will enable you to brush your teeth and wash your face, which will allow you to feel a little more refreshed upon arrival. A neck pillow, eye mask and a pair of socks will allow you to sleep more comfortably during the long flight.
Check your flight status. About six hours prior to departure, check the airline's website to ensure that your flight is on time. Some long-haul flights can be delayed, so checking ahead of time will ensure that you're not spending too long at the airport.
Go to the airport. For international flights to Japan, you should be at the airport at least two hours in advance. Check in at the airline counter, present your passport and check-in your luggage. You'll be given a boarding pass and your passport will be returned to you. Go through security and head to your gate to wait for your flight. The gate, flight and seat information will be printed on your ticket.
