Kentucky Horse Vacations

As home to the world-famous derby, Kentucky is practically synonymous with horses. In fact, nearly half of North American-born thoroughbred foals were born in Kentucky in 2009, according to the Kentucky Horse Council. The city of Lexington touts itself as the "Horse Capital of the World." Visitors can take horse-themed vacations throughout the Bluegrass State.
  1. Kentucky Derby

    • The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the Triple Crown and one of the world's most storied horse races. The race, which dates back to 1875, is held at Churchill Downs in Louisville on the first Saturday of May. The derby is more than just a horse race -- it's an event. Spectators, including celebrities, wear designer clothes and extravagant hats. Visitors can partake in Kentucky Derby traditions, including drinking mint juleps and singing along to "My Old Kentucky Home" as the horses make their way to the starting gate. For those not fortunate enough to get tickets to the derby, the track offers year-round simulcasting and seasonal live races. Churchill Downs is also home to the Kentucky Derby Museum -- also open throughout the year. The museum provides an opportunity to learn about the race's history and get your picture taken in the famous winner's circle.

    Kentucky Horse Park

    • The Kentucky Horse Park features a range of attractions for horse lovers. The Hall of Champions is home to thoroughbred legends, including Funny Cide -- the winner of the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes -- and Cigar, one of the most successful thoroughbreds of the 20th century. The thoroughbred stars are presented daily. Visitors can learn more about thoroughbreds and other breeds at the International Museum of the Horse and at the American Saddlebred Museum. The Kentucky Horse Park isn't just for spectator attractions -- horseback and pony rides are available. Additionally, the park has a campground with amenities that include a swimming pool and basketball, tennis and volleyball courts.

    Kentucky Action Park

    • In 1880, Jesse James held up a stagecoach in Cave City, Kentucky. Today, horse riders can visit the Jesse James Riding Stables at the Kentucky Action Park, where guides take riders through the same trails James once rode. You can also take 30-minute carriage rides on the weekend. The park has horse stalls for guests traveling with their own horses. In addition to horse-themed activities, the park also features an alpine slide, bumper boats, bumper cars, a trampoline and a go-kart track. Additionally, visitors can explore Outlaw Cave to view spectacular rock formations and take a canoe ride on the nearby Green River. The Kentucky Action Park is located near the Mammoth Cave National Park.
