Parks in Benidorm, Spain

Once a small village, Benidorm, Spain is now a bustling vacation destination with a skyline of hotels and apartment buildings that has given Benidorm the nicknames "The Manhattan" and "Beniyork." In addition to the Mediterranean beaches and mild winters, tourists come to Benidorm for its theme parks. Minutes from the beaches are large-scale parks with roller coasters, an animal kingdom and water slides.
  1. Terra Mítica

    • Terra Mítica is a sprawling theme park boasting 25 rides and attractions located on the north side of the A7 highway, which cuts through Benidorm and overlooks the southern downtown area and beaches. Terra Mítica is divided into five thematic areas: Egypt, Greece, Iberia, The Mediterranean Islands and Rome. Each section is decorated with the expected scenery; for example, pyramids can be found in the Egypt section.

Greece and Rome host the biggest roller coasters. The Magnus Colossus roller coaster in Rome is made entirely of wood. Other rides produce as many screams as the roller coasters, like Greece's SynKope, which spins and swings up to 70 people on a giant red wheel. The Flight of the Phoenix ride in Rome rouses riders when it lifts then drops them from over 220 ft. in the air. There are also rides for younger children who are not tall enough for the coasters and thrill rides; for example, Rome's Ayquesustus is the kiddie version of the Flight of the Phoenix. Ayquesustus drops children from almost 20 ft. In 2009, Terra Mítica added two free-access areas, one of which has many children's rides including a haunted maze and an indoor paintball game.

Across the park, there are performances for the whole family. During the month of August, the park stays open until 2:00 a.m. Terra Mítica tickets come with many different options; there are one and two day passes as well as evening tickets and group tickets. Children younger than 5 are free with an attending adult..

    Terra Natura

    • Next to Terra Mítica sits Terra Natura. Its animal kingdom flourishes in four eco-regions: América, Asia, Europe and Pangea. Terra Natura's meticulous landscaping maintains the flora and fauna that animals from each region would expect to live among. For example, in the Asia section, visitors will find both Asiatic lions and rubber trees. Terra Natura has a conservationist philosophy and an animal transfer policy based on the zoological ethics set by the World Zoo Conservation Strategy. Terra Natura presents seemingly unfettered access to the animals of each region with "Zooimmersion," which are inconspicuous protections for visitors but also open space to make it seem as if visitors were on a safari, not in a zoo. Terra Natura is open year round, with individual and group tickets and season passes available.

    Aqualandia

    • WIth views of the Mediterranean, Aqualandia's visitors enjoy the park's 16 attractions, including its largest slides, the Splash, the Zig-Zag and Soft Tracks, on which friends and family can race down its five open and parallel slides into the pool waiting below. Not all of Aqualandia's attractions thrust visitors into awaiting pools. Some, like the Niagara, recreate tropical beach coves. Others, like the Grand Jacuzzi, allow visitors to relax in warm, bubbly water. Or, the whole family can swim in and sunbathe next to the large Wave Pool. Visitors need not come to the park in their bathing suits; there are lockers available to rent. Aqualandia is open from late May until the beginning of October. There are individual and group passes available. Web offers sell those tickets at discounted prices.
