You don't have to be a diehard fan of the "King" to enjoy his mansion. Graceland is a tribute to the singer and pop culture of his era. You'll learn about his life and famous friends by viewing movie memorabilia, photos and videos. A tour takes you through his house with stops at the dining room, living room and music room. The 14-acre estate also showcases two of Presley's customized jets and a car museum with over 33 of his vehicles, including his well-known pink Cadillac. "Atlantic Monthly" put Presley on its list of the top 100 most influential figures in American history.
The peninsula offers an escape from the hustle of downtown Memphis. You'll be able to rent a kayak or canoe on the Wolf River Harbor. The River Walk is a replica of the lower Mississippi River that stretches 5 blocks. At the Mississippi River Museum, you'll learn about the history of the Lower Mississippi River Valley. Exhibits include the river's connection to the Civil War and engineering aspects of the river like levee building.
In the 1920s, Beale Street was known for its drinking, gambling, prostitution and murders. Today, the area might be more tame, but just as active. Sun Studio bills itself as "the birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll." And for good reason. Early rockers like Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash all recorded at the studio. You'll be able to learn how it all happened and observe memorabilia. The studio has National Historic Landmark status.
