Fun Places in Memphis

Memphis is a haven for music lovers. Fans flock to the western Tennessee city to visit Elvis Presley's famous home of Graceland. It also offer museums and venues celebrating the genres of blues, rock 'n' roll and soul. Besides music, you could enjoy a stroll on the Mud Island River Park or Beale Street. You might even end up petting baby pigs at the sprawling Memphis Zoo.
  1. Graceland

    • You don't have to be a diehard fan of the "King" to enjoy his mansion. Graceland is a tribute to the singer and pop culture of his era. You'll learn about his life and famous friends by viewing movie memorabilia, photos and videos. A tour takes you through his house with stops at the dining room, living room and music room. The 14-acre estate also showcases two of Presley's customized jets and a car museum with over 33 of his vehicles, including his well-known pink Cadillac. "Atlantic Monthly" put Presley on its list of the top 100 most influential figures in American history.

    Mud Island River Park

    • The peninsula offers an escape from the hustle of downtown Memphis. You'll be able to rent a kayak or canoe on the Wolf River Harbor. The River Walk is a replica of the lower Mississippi River that stretches 5 blocks. At the Mississippi River Museum, you'll learn about the history of the Lower Mississippi River Valley. Exhibits include the river's connection to the Civil War and engineering aspects of the river like levee building.

    Beale Street

    • In the 1920s, Beale Street was known for its drinking, gambling, prostitution and murders. Today, the area might be more tame, but just as active. There are over 25 clubs and shops, ranging from art galleries to fortune tellers to cafes playing blues music. B.B. King's Blues Club features local musicians.

    Stax Museum of American Soul Music

    • If you're feeling funky, go to the Stax Museum of American Soul Music located at the site of the famous Stax Records. Several legends recorded with Stax including Otis Redding, Booker T and Wilson Pickett. The museum celebrates American soul music with over 2,000 cultural artifacts, memorabilia and videos.

    Sun Studio

    • Sun Studio bills itself as "the birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll." And for good reason. Early rockers like Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash all recorded at the studio. You'll be able to learn how it all happened and observe memorabilia. The studio has National Historic Landmark status.

    Memphis Zoo

    • You'll likely be able to find your specie of choice at the Memphis Zoo. It house more than 3,500 animals and over 500 species. There are 19 exhibits spread over three zones, ranging from giant pandas to penguins.
