How to Go to the Roman Colosseum

One of the most famous ancient sites in the world is the Roman Colosseum. This mammoth circular structure, built between AD 71 to 72, is rich in history and drama.       Purchase tickets for the Colosseum. You can go to the ticket office on site. If you prefer you can buy tickets by telephone by calling +39 (0) 6 399 677 00. You can also purchase tickets online. See the Resources section below for a link. To see other sites go online to purchase the Archaeologia Card which includes Palazzo Massimo, Palazzo Altemps, Crypta Balbi, Terme di Diocleziano, Colosseum, Palatino, Terme di Caracalla, Villa dei Quintili and Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella. Consider buying the Roma pass, a three-day integrated ticket valid for the most important museums and archaeological sites of the city, which can also be used for traveling on the transport network.

      Take public transportation to the Colosseum. Use the Metro B line and exit at station Colosseo. For the Metro A line, stop at the Manzoni station, then get on a south-bound tram for two stops. If you are riding a bus, use lines 60, 75, 85, 87,175, 810, 850 or the electric minibus 117. Trams numbered 3 and 8 stop near the Colosseum.

      Know the essential facts about the Colosseum before you go. The Colosseum is open every day from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., or until one hour before dark seasonally. Originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, the Colosseum could seat 45,000 to 50,000 spectators. For almost 500 years the Colosseum hosted gladiatorial fights, mock sea battles, exotic animal hunts, public punishments and executions and historical reenactments. The Pope still leads a torch-lit procession to the Colosseum every Good Friday before Easter.
