Roller Coasters That Use Magnetic Propulsion Systems

Magnetic propulsion systems provide a way to enhance already thrilling roller coaster experiences for riders. The system eliminates the need for traditional hill and chain starts that slowly pull cars upward to the coaster's actual starting points. With magnetic propulsion, cars instantly reach the necessary speed that continues throughout the ride.
  1. United States

    • The United States feature an abundance of roller coasters that use magnetic propulsion. Disney theme parks at both Orlando, Florida, and Anaheim, California, have coasters that use the system. California Screamin' at Disney's California Adventure accelerates to 55 miles per hour in just four seconds. A blade under each passenger car trips one of the 20 optical sensors along the track. Rock N' Roller Coaster, starring Aerosmith, at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds. The effect of this start is similar to the force of a F14 jet. Each passenger car has a 32,000 watt audio system that continuously plays selected Aerosmith songs during the ride.

Flight of Fear at Kings Island in Ohio and Kings Dominion in Virginia have identical coasters. Each one takes guests from 0 to 54 miles per hour in four seconds. These coasters, debuting in 1996, were the first magnetic propulsion coasters. They run indoor with a dark ride that carries a UFO theme throughout.

    Europe

    • Several coasters in Europe feature magnetic propulsion systems. Stealth at Thorpe Park in Surrey is one of Europe's fastest coasters. It reaches speeds of around 80 miles per hour in 1.8 seconds. Superman The Ride, at Six Flags Holland, was the first LIM launch coaster in Europe. It closely resembles the Rock N' Roller Coaster at Disney World in Florida. Acceleration goes from 0 to 56 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds.

    Australia

    • Australia has limited magnetic propulsion roller coaster choices. Tower of Terror at Dreamworld in Queensland is one of the fastest coasters in the world. The coaster goes from 0 to 100 miles per hour in seven seconds. Only 15 passengers can go through the ride due to the single running train. Superman Escape at Warner Bros. Movie World reaches 62 miles per hour in two seconds.

    Canada

    • Canada only has a few choices when it comes to magnetic propulsion roller coasters. Backlot Stunt Coaster is at Canada's Wonderland in Vaughan, Ontario. Passenger cars accelerate from 0 to 40 miles per hour in four seconds. The steel tracks runs more than 1,960 feet in length.
