Billy Gilmore is a retired professional ice hockey player who played 12 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Buffalo Sabres and Calgary Flames. He was born on July 15, 1958, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Gilmore played junior hockey for the Ontario Hockey League's Oshawa Generals before being drafted by the Sabres in the first round (sixth overall) of the 1978 NHL Entry Draft.

Gilmore made his NHL debut with the Sabres in the 1979–80 season. He quickly established himself as one of the league's top defencemen, known for his physical play and strong skating ability. Gilmore was a key member of the Sabres' Stanley Cup championship team in 1992, and he was also a two-time winner of the Norris Trophy, awarded to the NHL's top defenceman.

After 11 seasons with the Sabres, Gilmore was traded to the Calgary Flames in 1992. He played one season with the Flames before retiring from the NHL in 1993.

After retiring from hockey, Gilmore worked as a scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was also a coach in the American Hockey League (AHL) and the Ontario Hockey League.

Gilmore was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008.
