Fun Things to Do in Cozumel

If you're planning to spend a week relaxing in Cozumel or are just stopping off for the day during your cruise, you'll find there is no shortage of activities on this island, Mexico's largest. Whether your passion is water sports, dancing, dining or sunbathing on secluded beaches, you'll find there are plenty of fun things to do in Cozumel.
  1. Scuba Diving

    • Spend an afternoon exploring the deep by scuba diving in the waters around Cozumel, one of the world's premier diving spots. Even if you've never tried scuba diving before, in just a few hours you'll be swimming among the fish and coral. Try Scuba Mau, Scuba Tony Cozumel or one of the many other diving outfits on the island.

    San Miguel de Cozumel

    • The island's only town is San Miguel de Cozumel, where you can find restaurants and plenty of shops carrying tourist knickknacks. Those who like to see beautiful churches will like the Iglesia de San Miguel Arcangel, right on the town's main square. Head down to the main square after 9 o'clock on Sunday night, where you'll find vacationers and locals boogying to a live band playing in the gazebo.

    Mayan Ruins

    • The Maya once inhabited the island of Cozumel, and you can see the ruins of two of their towns,
San Gervasio and El Cedral. Some of the structures at San Gervasio have been restored to give visitors an idea how of they appeared when they were in daily use.

    Isla Pasion

    • For picturesque beaches, hidden rivers and stunning natural beauty, Isla Pasion, or Passion Island, is the place to go. This island shows off Cozumel's flora to great effect. If you're going with a tour, such as the one listed in the resources section, you can choose to enjoy a picnic on the beach, ride a jeep through the jungle, kayaking or more.

    Spearfishing

    • If you want to try an activity that's a little out of the ordinary, check out a tour with Spearfishing Cozumel. As the name suggests, you will be trying to catch a fish the old-fashioned way: with a spear. You can choose to spearfish by jumping into the water from the shore or from a boat. Tours are available for beginners, more advanced spear fishermen, and families and groups with members who choose not to spearfish. Please see the link in the resources section below for more information.

    Beaches

    • Cozumel's year-round hot weather makes it an ideal location for hitting the beach. At pretty Playa Corona, you can rent snorkeling gear and then explore the clear, turquoise water without running into other tourists every two feet. There's also a restaurant that serves tasty food for reasonable prices. Playa de Palancar is another favorite, with delicious food, drinks and comfy beach lounges available to visitors.
