Dauphin Island & Things to Do

Located on the Gulf of Mexico, south of Mobile, Alabama, Dauphin Island was discovered in 1699 by French brothers Bienville and Iberville Le Moyne who also founded New Orleans. Dauphin Island is 14 miles long and 1 3/4 miles wide. Known for its secluded white sand beaches, boating and golfing, as well as being an internationally ranked bird sanctuary, Dauphin Island is accessible by a three-mile-long bridge.
  1. Gulf Coast Beaches

    • Dauphin Island is proud of its sugar white sand beaches and diverse sea life. Here, the Gulf of Mexico is celebrated: boating and fishing opportunities abound. Whether you hire a charter fishing boat, go parasailing, fish from one of the several Dauphin Island piers or just comb the beach for interesting sea life and play in the surf, you will enjoy the relaxing effect of being on Dauphin Island's Gulf Coast.

    Bird Sanctuary and Sea Life

    • Dauphin Island has a unique advantage over many of the other resort areas on the Gulf Coast. It is not overdeveloped like many of the well-known tourist destinations on the Gulf of Mexico. On Dauphin Island you can relax and enjoy nature; visit the Audubon Bird Sanctuary to see the many varieties of migrating birds, or the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and be amazed at the colorful, tropical fish and marine life. Dauphin Island ranks high in the best spots in the world to see birds during the spring migration.

    Historic Fort Gaines

    • Dauphin Island's Fort Gaines is one of the best preserved battle sites in the nation. It is famous for its role in the American Civil War during the Battle of Mobile Bay, but was also used in the Spanish-American War. The fort has several cannons used during the Civil War, as well as five pre-Civil War brick buildings and a working blacksmith shop and museum.
