Things to Do in Lake Tahoe During the Winter

Conveniently located just 45 minutes from Reno, Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the most popular resort areas on the West Coast. The second deepest lake in the United States, Lake Tahoe is more than 70 miles around and is split across the California and Nevada border.

North Lake Tahoe offers a large selection of luxury resorts and rental properties. South Lake Tahoe features more casinos and entertainment options. Though popular year-round, Lake Tahoe sees the majority of its visitors during the winter months.
  1. Winter Sports

    • With an average snowfall of more than 400 inches, Lake Tahoe is one of America's most popular winter playgrounds. The area features resorts for downhill skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing, as well as a huge variety of winter sports.

Some of the more popular resorts include Squaw Valley, host of the 1960 Winter Olympics, as well as Northstar and Alpine Meadows, all located on the north shore.

Heavenly Mountain Resort is located on the south shore. It is possible to drive around the entire lake in winter but you may need snow tires in some areas. Check with your hotel to confirm driving conditions.

    Gaming

    • If gaming and entertainment are more your style of vacation, Lake Tahoe offers several luxury properties.

On the north shore, the Cal Neva Resort, Spa and Casino sits on the California Nevada border. This historic property was once owned by Frank Sinatra and has welcomed guests since 1926. The full-service casino features slots, table games and player's clubs.

On the south shore, gaming giant Harrah's features a full casino with regular tournaments, stay-and-play packages and top-name entertainment such as Al Jarreau, Merle Haggard and Brian Wilson.

    Winter Events

    • Even if you don't enjoy winter sports or gaming, there are plenty of events to enjoy.

In November, the Tahoe International Film Festival brings independent filmmakers and fans to Tahoe for five days of movie screenings and parties. Befitting its Hollywood history, the Cal Neva Resort often hosts many of the events during the festival.

The Lake Tahoe Snow Festival in North Lake Tahoe celebrates winter with 10 days of special events, parades and concerts. In 2011 it will celebrate its 30th anniversary.
