Paris Sightseeing Tips

After strolling the Champs-Elysées, visiting the Eiffel Tower, shopping at Les Halles or Galeries Lafayette, exploring the Louvre, and snapping photos at Notre Dame, the list of possible activities in Paris is still as long as the Seine. While it is impossible to take in all this magnificent French capital has to offer with just one vacation, there are ways to make the most of your adventure in Paris while crossing off museums, landmarks and sights on your check-list.
  1. Pick Up a "Plan de Paris" Brochure

    • Whether you're entering Paris from a train station, bus station or airport, these free brochures are offered everywhere, and they are amazingly useful. The Métro Parisien map shows a brightly colored, easy-to-read map of the metro system, which highlights major stops and tourist attractions. Unfold the brochure completely and you'll find a detailed map of the entire city of Paris that marks major transport stations, landmarks and other places of interest. The opposite side of the map lists the addresses, bus and metro lines, and other general information for shopping, museums, monuments, hotels, pharmacies and taxi companies. This brochure practically lays out its own travel itinerary through Paris.

    Bike through the city

    • As of July 15, 2007, Paris again impressed the world with its innovative, environmentally conscious addition to its city transportation system. Tens of thousands of low-cost rental bikes at hundreds of bicycle stations are scattered throughout the city. For 1.60 euros, Parisians and tourists can remove a high-tech bike and drop it off at any other bike station in the city. Not only has this move improved traffic and pollution, but it also offers an active way to take in the sights and sounds of Paris while heading from one destination to another.

    Picnic Like a Parisian

    • While fitting as much as possible into your Parisian itinerary is exciting, hastily hopping from one tourist destination to another prevents visitors from experiencing the true Parisian lifestyle. The French enjoy life's sweet pleasures by relaxing with wine, cheese and fresh baguettes (this is not just a stereotype). Another clear advantage of being in France is the wide availability and low cost of fine cheese and wine. Stop at any store and pick up some Roquefort, Camembert or whichever other cheese tickles your fancy; head to the bakery (abundant in Paris) for fresh, warm baguettes; and select a bottle or two of wine. Basket everything together and get to Le Jardin du Luxembourg for a picnic in the park. This well-manicured, huge park has plenty of seats and benches, soft grass, vegetation and bright flowers that seem to drip into the serene atmosphere. Relax near one of the baroque fountains and indulge in cheese, wine and people-watching. Picnics are also pleasurable next to the Seine, and in Montmartre, on the grass or steps below the famous Basilique du Sacré Coeur.
