Soul Food Restaurants and Lounges in Alexandria, Virginia

Located 5 miles south of Washington, D.C., Alexandria reflects much of D.C.'s vibrant and eclectic culture. Alexandria's restaurant scene is an appealing mix of American and world cuisine where you can find terrific burgers, nam sod (Thai pork salad), fasolia (Greek-style beans), plato tipico (a Salvadoran style egg and tortilla dish) and all points in between. Although Alexandria does not have as many soul food restaurants as D.C., they can still stand proudly alongside the best of our nation's capital.
  1. Southside 815

    • For 10 years running, Southside 815 has been tapped by "The Washingtonian" as one of Northern Virginia's hundred best bargain restaurants. Southside's Boardinghouse Breadbasket is one of the restaurant's signature starters and features a mouthwatering selection of buttermilk biscuits, sweet potato biscuits and cornbread. Other soul food favorites include the drunken pot roast, which includes skin-on mashed red potatoes, and blackened catfish served with greens and rice. If you go for Southside's Sunday brunch, the pecan pancakes are a popular menu staple.

For the budget-minded, King Street's Southern Supper menu includes soul food favorites like apple chipotle-glazed pork chops and grilled tilapia that are each served with three sides and an order of cornbread. Among King Street's signature sandwiches, the Sister Mary---pulled chicken BBQ served with coleslaw---is a popular favorite.

    Warehouse Bar and Grill

    • The Warehouse Bar and Grill, one of Alexandria's most popular restaurants, serves classic soul food dishes like creole alligator stew, crawfish and shrimp etouffée, catfish topped with crawfish etouffée and New Orleans-style po' boys with panache and, if you go for lunch or Sunday brunch, there are surprisingly low prices to boot. The dinner menu, while southern style, is not as heavy on soul food, although it does have their popular southern-fried catfish plate. Reservations recommended.
