As stated above, the official language of Malaysia is Malay. It is the primary language used in schools and is what is normally spoken on the streets, however, such is not always the case when dealing with business. Many business endeavors, especially with those that involve parties from other countries, are conducted in English. English is a widely used language for this and it is necessary to learn and understand it in order to succeed in the world of business within the country.
For those working in the merchandise business (especially sidewalk vendors), it is important to know English. Most visitors and tourists know the language, making it easier to sell and persuade others to buy the products. It also helps when attempting to haggle for a price.
For those working in the hospitality field, whether it be a hotel or upscale restaurant, it is especially important to be fluent in the English language. As stated before, most visitors will understand English, so checking them into a room or asking what they would like for dessert will be much easier to do when both parties can use the same language. This, in the end, could also bring out a better tip from the guest.
Outside of Malaysia, there are few who actually speak the official language of Malay. So, if that is the only language known when traveling outside of the country, tasks and getting around could become extremely difficult. Most places and countries, no matter where they are in the world, will have someone present who speaks English, so there will be a much better chance of being understood when speaking English rather than Malay.
It is always good to know another language, not just the typical language of the country. Even if you don't foresee yourself getting a job in business or hospitality, or traveling to other places around the world, you never know when being able to speak English will come in handy. It will most likely come into use when you least expect it, but then you'll be extremely glad you took the time to learn the second language.
