About Reading, England

Reading, England, one of England's largest towns, is located 38 miles west of London in the Royal County of Berkshire. Throughout England's history, Reading has played an important role since its inception in the eighth century. Reading has also been home to many famous residents, authors and artists. One of the largest music festivals in the United Kingdom is also held in Reading every year.
  1. Founding

    • Reading was originally founded as Readingum during the eighth century. The name Reading Abbey was established in 1121 by King Henry I.

    Revolution 1688

    • During England's Revolution of 1688, Reading was the only town to have significant fighting. The second Battle of Reading occurred there between the Dutch Republic and soldiers loyal to James II.

    Brewing

    • Reading became famous for its brewing during the eighteenth century.
