How to Tell the Age on Thai ID Cards

At first glance, a Thai identification card may be very confusing, especially figuring out how old someone from Thailand is. A Thai ID card carries the Buddhist calendar year instead of the Western/Gregorian calendar year. The Buddhist calendar is hundreds of years ahead of the Western calendar.

Instructions

    • 1

Observe the Thai ID card. You will notice that the ID card offers quite a lot of information.

    • 2

Locate the third line down on the ID card. In English, it looks like it reads "iuina," which is "Date-of-Birth" in English. The first line is the person's first name and the second line is his last name.

    • 3

Locate the year of birth. Thai ID cards provide the Buddhist Thai Year, which is not the same as the Western year. For example, if his ID reads that he was born in "2530," that would be "1987" in the United States.

    • 4

Find the birth year: It should start with a "25" and be four digits.

    • 5

Subtract 543 from the birth year to "translate" the year into the Western calendar year.

    • 6

Subtract the Western calendar year from the current year. For example, if you subtract 1991 from 2010, you will get 19 for the age.
