Languages Spoken in Cyprus: Greek, Turkish & Minority Tongues

Cyprus has two official languages:

• Greek (Cypriot dialect) — spoken by ~75% (Greek Cypriots)
• Turkish (Cypriot dialect) — spoken by ~25% (Turkish Cypriots)

Constitutional & Practical Reality

• 1960 Constitution: Both official; legislation in both; courts bilingual.
• Since 1974 division: Greek dominant in Republic-controlled south (60%); Turkish dominant in north (TRNC, recognized only by Turkey).
• Green Line (UN buffer zone): Bilingual signage at crossings.

Widely Spoken Additional Languages

• English: Near-universal fluency (education, tourism, business, British legacy). De facto lingua franca.
• Russian: Large post-Soviet expat community (50,000+); tourism, real estate.
• Romanian, Bulgarian, Filipino, Sri Lankan: Migrant worker communities.
• Armenian: Recognized minority (Armenian Cypriots ~3,000); own schools, church.
• Arabic: Lebanese/Syrian expats; some Maronite Cypriots.

Language Politics

Language remains identity-laden. Reunification talks (bizonal, bicommunal federation) include language rights guarantees. EU membership (2004) added Greek as official EU language; Turkish would follow if/when north joins.
