- Yes, UCLA requires two years of foreign language coursework.
Can your English and Japanese proficiency count toward this requirement?
- UCLA may count your English and Japanese proficiency toward the foreign language requirement if you demonstrate a high level of proficiency in these languages. You can do this by:
1. Submitting a score of 5 or higher on the AP English Literature or AP English Language and Composition exam.
2. Completing two semesters of college-level Japanese coursework with a grade of B or higher.
*Note: If you have taken AP/IB/Dual Enrollment courses and received 4s, 5s, 7s, or the IB HL equivalent in them, UC's will waive the subject requirements you earn in this manner.*
Testing out of the foreign language requirement
- UCLA does not offer a placement test to test out of the foreign language requirement.
Other ways to meet the foreign language requirement
- If you are not able to demonstrate proficiency in English and Japanese, you can still meet the foreign language requirement by:
1. Taking two semesters of a foreign language at UCLA.
2. Completing a foreign language proficiency exam.
3. Transferring in foreign language coursework from another college or university.
I hope this helps!
