Security Features in Hotels

When you make hotel reservations, your biggest concerns may be comfort, cleanliness and access to a variety of amenities such as free breakfast, a pool and business services. However, one of the most important yet overlooked features of a hotel is security. A few basic types of security are present at most hotels, and as a guest, you have the right to request information regarding these features. You should also implement a few personal safety strategies such as taking advantage of an in-room safe, if available, keeping ground-level windows locked, and never leaving your room open, even if you are only stepping out for a few minutes.

  1. Security Personnel

    • While not commonplace, some hotels employ security personnel to patrol both the hotel and its grounds to watch for suspicious people or activity that may endanger the hotel staff or guests, and also to be available if a guest needs help. Security personnel may assist with a flat tire, help a guest who is locked out of his room, question someone who appears to be on the property without a reservation, or even provide medical assistance in the case of an emergency. Security guards typically do not carry firearms, but this may vary by hotel and local laws.

    Alarms

    • Laws requiring fire alarms and sprinklers vary by state, but most hotels have some sort of fire emergency protocol, which may include individual room fire detectors or a system of connected alarms. All hotels should post maps indicating fire exits and the locations of fire extinguishers. Hotels may also utilize security alarms after hours to protect against not only theft, but people who may try to enter the premises without a hotel key. Hotels often attract kids who are looking for a free swim in the pool, and sometimes even vagrants seeking a place to sleep in a back stairwell or other quiet area of the building. A hotel may also have alarms to warm guests about approaching severe weather.

    Security Cameras

    • In the absence of security personnel, security cameras, while not required, are often utilized to not only protect the property from vandalism or theft, but also to keep guests and their personal belongings safe. Cameras can be used to watch for a variety of serious security concerns such as room break-ins, arson and assault, as well as less serious infractions such as too many guests staying in a single room.
