Tokaj Hotels

Hungary's wine country spreads over hilly terrain north of the Danube. The French king Louis XIV called Tokaji wine "the king of wines and the wine of kings." Tokaj is the capital of this historic wine region, some 200 miles northeast of Budapest. The town's lovely setting at the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers as well as its 18th century architecture attracts tourists. The Tokaj area offers hotels to suit most pocketbooks.
  1. Tokaj Hotel

    • The Tokaj Hotel and Restaurant is a budget accommodation at the foot of Tokaj Mountain. It provides 30 double rooms with full baths and 12 double rooms with showers. All accommodations include Internet access and cable television and are, according to Frommers, modern and comfortable. The on-premises restaurant serves meals on a terrace with panoramic views of the hills surrounding Tokaj, and sometimes offers gypsy music for diners' pleasure.

    SOS Tavern

    • The SOS Tavern and Pension looks like a large red-and-white barn in rolling vineyards. The hotel proposes 11 rooms with air conditioning, cable television and telephone. A restaurant and a traditional wine cellar share the premises. Guests fish nearby Mádi Lake or hunt game in the forests of Hegyalja.

    Grof Dagenfeld Castle Hotel

    • Travelers who wish to lodge in a castle can in Tarcal, five miles from Tokaj. The 4-star hotel, Grof Degenfeld Castle Hotel, was originally the ancestral home of the Degenfeld family and is set in the middle of a large vineyard. The hotel offers 20 guestrooms and one suite, with antique furniture, old paintings and Venetian chandeliers. Guests enjoy a salon and library on the ground floor, and an on-premises restaurant. The swimming-pool opens in summers.

    Toldi Fogadó

    • The Toldi Fogadó bills itself as a hotel and wellness center. The hotel proposes 20 air-conditioned rooms, including doubles, triples and several family suites. Some rooms have baths, some showers, but all enjoy Internet access, cable television and minibar. Guests have access to the "wellness facilities," which include a heated pool, hot tub, Finnish sauna and tanning machines. The on-site restaurant specializes in Hungarian cuisine.
