Languages of El Salvador: Spanish and Indigenous Tongues

The official and dominant language of El Salvador is Spanish.

Several indigenous languages are also spoken, though by smaller populations:

• Nahuatl (Pipil): Most widely spoken indigenous language.
• Lenca: Endangered, spoken in eastern departments.
• Cacaopera (Kakawira): Extinct or nearly extinct.

Efforts exist to preserve and revitalize these languages.
