Standard Japanese (標準語 hyōjungo?), also called Common Japanese, is the standardized dialect of Japanese taught in Japanese schools and used by the Japanese government, mass media, and most newspapers and magazines. It is based largely on the Tōkyō dialect of Japanese, which developed from the Prestige leveling at the end of the Edo period, though it avoids such extreme honorifics or humble language found in Tokyo dialect.
