Anime overwhelmingly uses Standard Japanese (標準語, Hyōjungo), also called Common Japanese (共通語, Kyōtsūgo).

Definition

• Standardized dialect taught in schools, used by government, national media (NHK), newspapers, literature.
• Based on Tokyo's Yamanote dialect (historically elite wards), but stripped of extreme honorifics (keigo) and "Edokko" colloquialisms.
• Post-WWII standardization (National Language Council) solidified it.

Anime-Specific Nuances

• Clear articulation, neutral pitch accent for broad comprehension.
• Character archetypes use stylized registers: "Ore-sama" (arrogant male), "Ojou-sama" (rich girl), "Kansai-ben" (comedic/rough), "Tohoku-ben" (rustic) — deviations from Hyōjungo for characterization.
• Fantasy/Sci-Fi neologisms invented per series.

What It Is NOT

Not "Tokyo street slang," not Kansai dialect (Osaka/Kyoto), not classical Japanese (bungo). It is the lingua franca of modern Japan.
