How do people communicate in Iceland?

The most common language spoken in Iceland is Icelandic, which is a North Germanic language. While Icelandic has a long and rich history, a vast majority of the population — nearly all of the roughly 370,000 to 380,000 people who call Iceland home — speak Icelandic as their first language, with very few exceptions.

Since Iceland is a relatively isolated island nation located between the Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans, its primary language has remained relatively unchanged over the centuries. English is widely understood and spoken in Iceland, especially in the tourism and hospitality industry, and many Icelanders are also fluent in other languages such as Norwegian, Danish and Swedish due to cultural and geographical proximity to other Nordic countries.

However, for the majority of Icelanders, Icelandic is the language of everyday communication, cultural expression and education, thus making it the dominant and primary means of communication in Iceland.
