How did Germany acquire its language?

The history of the German language is long and complex, but the earliest evidence of Germanic languages dates back to the 1st century AD, when the Roman historian Tacitus wrote of the "Germani". These tribes spoke many different languages, which over time evolved into the modern Germanic languages.

German specifically evolved from West Germanic, which was also the ancestor of English, Dutch, and Frisian. The first written evidence of German dates back to the 8th century AD, in the form of a few runic inscriptions. In the 9th century, the first German literary texts were written, and by the 12th century, German was the dominant language in Central Europe.

The German language has been shaped by many different influences, including Latin, French, and Slavic languages. It is a highly inflected language, with four cases and three genders. German also has a very complex verb system, with many irregular verbs.

Despite its complexity, German is a widely spoken language, with over 100 million speakers worldwide. It is the official language of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Luxembourg, and is also spoken in parts of Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and the Czech Republic.
