What was the traditional Mongolian way of life?

Nomadic Lifestyle

The traditional Mongolian way of life was nomadic. Mongolians lived in gers, portable felt tents, and moved with their herds of animals to find fresh pasture. They relied on animal husbandry for their livelihood and diet, raising horses, cattle, sheep, and goats. Animals provided them with food, clothing, shelter, and transportation. Hunting and gathering also supplemented their diet.

Social Structure

Mongolian society was hierarchical, with a strong emphasis on kinship and lineage. The Mongols were organized into clans and tribes, each led by a chief or khan. The khan was responsible for making decisions, leading military campaigns, and administering justice. Below the khan were nobles, warriors, and commoners.

Culture and Religion

Mongolian culture was rich in oral traditions, including epic poems, tales of heroes, and historical narratives. Music, dance, and wrestling were important forms of cultural expression. The Mongols practiced shamanism, a traditional religion that involved the belief in spirits and the use of rituals to communicate with them. Later, Buddhism and Islam were also introduced to Mongolia.

Military Prowess

The Mongols were renowned for their military prowess and conquered vast territories in the 13th century under the leadership of Genghis Khan. Their success was attributed to their exceptional horsemanship, archery skills, and strategic tactics. The Mongols established the Mongol Empire, one of the largest contiguous empires in history.
