What Language Does Rioja Speak? (It's a Region, Not a People)

Rioja doesn't speak a language—it's a wine region in northern Spain.

The people of La Rioja speak Spanish (Castilian), the official language of Spain. In some areas, particularly near the Basque border, you'll also hear Basque (Euskara), a language isolate unrelated to any other European tongue.

Rioja is famous for its red wines (Tempranillo-based), not a distinct language or ethnic group. The name comes from the Oja River (Río Oja → Rioja), not a people.
