Instructions

  1. Before You Depart: Preparation for Your Transatlantic Flight

    • 1

Reduce pre-departure stress with advanced planning in an effort to avoid typical airport delays such as heavy traffic and long lines. Pre-planning can include arriving at the airport hours before the recommended arrival time. Avoid arriving at the airport during peak hours to improve the chances of shorter wait times for checking in your luggage and getting through security lines.

    • 2

Ask a family member or friend to drop you off at the airport rather than driving yourself and dragging luggage from parking lots. Checking luggage and printing out boarding passes before arriving at the airport can also help with reducing stress. Limit your carry-on to one bag and avoid carrying any extra items that do not fit in the bag.

    • 3

Reserve a good seat if you can when booking your ticket. All airplane seats in the same class and fare rate are not created equal. Aisle seats and those near exit rows have more leg room. If you want to sleep, having a window seat will allow you to control the amount of sunlight. Avoid seats near the lavatories where people will be walking frequently.

    • 4

Get plenty of rest and keep your body hydrated at least 48 days before departure so your body is operating efficiently. Avoid caffeine. Include healthy snacks in your carry-on bag, and purchase a large bottle of water once you pass the security gates.

    • 5

Prepare your carry-on bag to include entertainment items such as books, laptop computer, portable DVD player and movies, headphones, puzzles, games or craft projects.

    During the Flight

    • 6

Continue to keep your body hydrated throughout the flight by drinking water frequently. Use eye drops and nasal spray if your eyes or nose become irritated from the dryness caused by cabin air. Lip balm and lotion will help keep your skin moist.

    • 7

Perform in-seat exercises such as rotating your ankles and stretching your arms to prevent body aches and poor circulation. Stroll up and down the aisle a few times. Do back stretches at the back of the cabin.

    • 8

Avoid eating spicy foods that may interfere with digestion.

    • 9

Use an eye mask and pillow for more comfortable sleep.
