Colorado Driving Requirement Laws on Ski Racks

The ski rack might be the most landscape-appropriate automotive accessory for Colorado drivers. It's good to know, then, what legal territory you might veer into by affixing rack and skis to the roof of a vehicle. Colorado statutes don't explicitly address ski racks, but laws on vehicle height and driver visibility apply.
  1. Driver Visibility

    • When fastening ski equipment to the roof of a car, drivers should consider whether any hanging ski tips will obstruct their view. Colorado statutes state that it is illegal to drive a vehicle upon any highway unless the driver's vision through any of the vehicle's glass is "normal and unobstructed."

    Vehicle Height

    • Drivers of some especially tall vehicles should take care that adding the ski rack does not push the vehicle past the maximum allowable height. According to Colorado statutes, it is illegal for a vehicle and its load to stand higher than 13 feet.

    Penalties

    • Drivers who are stopped by a police officer for one of the above violations are subject to a fine plus a smaller surcharge, levied against all offenders, for administrative costs. The fine for having an obstructed view is $35, and the surcharge is $10. The fine for exceeding the maximum vehicle height is $75, and the surcharge is $24.
