Passengers who are standing near a stationed or moving bus should keep a safe distance. Since buses have many blind spots do to their large size, it is always important to stand 10 to 15 steps away from the back, sides and front of the bus. Keeping a safe distance can prevent passengers from being struck, which could lead to severe injuries.
Bus passengers are frequently asked to stay seated in a front-facing position until the bus has come to a full stop. Bus drivers request this to prevent passengers from falling forward or tumbling into the walkway, which can cause injuries. Remaining seated until the bus has stopped also permits the walkway to be clear for passengers to walk through. This is especially important because if an emergency arises, all passengers will have to exit the bus quickly, and may not be able to do so if someone is obstructing the walkway.
The noise level in a bus can be a huge distraction to any driver who is operating a bus. High noise levels due to yelling and loud music can draw the bus drivers attention away from the road, which could cause an accident to occur. Passengers should speak in low voices, and avoid yelling to other passengers across the bus. If a passenger has a question for the bus driver, he should wait until the bus has come to a full stop, raise his hand and call out the bus driver's name. This will help the bus driver focus his attention on the passenger, without worrying about the road.
