While out on a ship, many inclimate weather situations can arise, such as a thunderstorm or hurricane. Before leaving port, the crew should make sure that each passenger is aware of the weather safety hazards and how to react to these situations. Each ship will have its own safety procedures in case of a weather emergency. Make sure that you are aware of these procedures before getting underway, such as where to go in case of a storm or a more hazardous situation that may require you to leave the ship.
Rails are placed in stairwells and hallways and on the decks of ships to keep passengers and crews safe while sailing through uncertain water. Anyone who does not utilize the rails while aboard the ship may lose their footing and fall, causing injury to themselves or someone else. This can even happen while traveling through calm waters. Hold on to the rails while walking through stairwells or hallways. Do not climb on or over any rails, particularly those on the deck. This will help you to avoid falling or possibly going overboard.
Avoid excessive drinking or drug use while onboard a ship. Alcohol and recreational drugs will impair your judgment as well as your response time. This could result in possible injury or even death if someone falls down a staircase or overboard. Anyone found abusing these substances while onboard a ship may be required to be confined to a cabin until they are no longer under the influence and can responsibly move about the ship unaided.
