Turkey Travel Safety

Turkey is a popular tourist destination with natural wonders, cosmopolitan cities, great restaurants, ancient archaeological sites, and sports and adventure facilities that fascinate visitors. However, it has been a target for terrorist bombings, and all visitors must take precaution to ensure safety while in Turkey.
  1. Considerations

    • If you are visiting the southeastern part of Turkey, you should travel by commercial airline, as it is the safest. If you must travel by road, ensure that you only travel the major highways during daylight hours. You should also avoid using public transport while in this region. Always carry your passport, identification card, vehicle registration and driver's license, since you may need to present them to police officers at various checkpoints.

    Checkpoints

    • Expect police officers to stop you for inspection as you drive in the southeastern region of Turkey. You should cooperate with these officials and present all identification documents required. Try to stay calm, and avoid making any sudden movements while at the checkpoint. When driving through areas that are considered troublesome, you will be offered escort vehicles.

    Warning

    • Refuse strangers who ask you to deliver parcels, letters or any other items within or outside Turkey. In the past, the PKK-a militant Kurdish separatist group has tried to take advantage of foreigners to deliver messages and packages within and outside Turkey on their behalf. Note that if you get caught in possession of such packages or letters, you will be arrested for helping and supporting the terrorist organization.

    Caution

    • While in Turkey, try to maintain a low profile, and always remain vigilant as far as your personal security is concerned. Remember that terrorists never make a distinction between civilian and official targets, and since security has been heightened in U.S. official facilities, they seek easier targets. Such targets include facilities popular with Americans and Westerners, like shops, residential areas and entertainment spots.

    Potential Risks

    • During your stay in Turkey, avoid participating in any demonstrations regardless of the cause or how peaceful they are. Demonstrations can turn confrontational and could lead to violence. Stay away from these areas, and, if you are in the vicinity, take caution. Stay abreast of current issues, and follow media reports about any upcoming demonstrations or civil disturbances.
