Charter Bus Safety

Whether you own a charter bus company or travel as a passenger on one, it's important to know how to travel safely. A properly licensed driver, informed passengers and a bus that functions properly can make a charter bus trip safe and enjoyable.
  1. Bus Driver

    • The bus driver should be well-rested for long trips and ask his bus company owner for help if he feels drowsy or sick. Under the law, the driver must possess a valid state driver's license and commercial driver's license. He can also use the suggested script provided by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA) to familiarize passengers with safety guidelines.

    Passengers

    • The FMCSA advises passengers to keep all items (including hands and feet) out of the bus's aisle. If you need to stand up or walk up the aisle, use the seat backs or overhead supports to stay steady. Passengers should obey the bus driver at all times, and should know where to find the exits, fire extinguisher and medical kit in case of an emergency. Call 911, if necessary.

    Mechanics

    • Charter buses need regular maintenance. The driver should have phone numbers and addresses of towing services and qualified mechanics along the route. She should also keep proof of insurance in a safe place on board the bus in case of an accident.
