Facts About Mexico's Insects

Mexico has a range of habitat from lush green forests to dry deserts. Moreover, the warm and moist climate makes it an ideal place for insects to thrive. Insects in Mexico are commonly offered on the dinner menu. The most popular meals include grasshoppers, maguey worms, cicadas and ant larvae.
  1. Army Ants

    • Army ants travel in masses that can be up to 12 inches wide. These ants are very aggressive and can destroy animals as large as goats. The insects prey as a group with their nasty bite. In Mexico, these ants are considered a good way to control bigger and more nasty insects.

    Cicada Killers

    • The cicada killer is a wasp that is 1-1/2 inches in length and paralyzes cicadas with its sting. It then carries the cicada into its nesting burrow and lays eggs on it and seals it. When the eggs hatch, the larva feed on the cicada. These wasps are commonly seen in sandy parts of Mexico. Female cicada killers can sting humans if disturbed. However, the male counterparts are incapable of stinging.

    Bark Beetles

    • Bark beetles are commonly seen in Mexico and are known for their destructive powers. These beetles feed on pine trees and damage them. These hard-shelled beetles do not attack trees that have been dead for over a season. In healthy trees, they attack individual branches and twigs that are dying.

    Mexican Unicorn Mantis

    • The Mexican Unicorn Mantis has a "horn" in the center of its head. It is also known as the Texas praying mantis because it is commonly found on the southern Texas and Mexico border.
