Forest Fire Prevention Tips

Prevention is key to avert the start of forest and wildfires. Human carelessness accounts for the burning of acres of forests each year. At the first sign of a forest fire, leave immediately and contact local emergency personnel. If exit trails or roads are blocked, find the nearest stream or lake.
  1. Campfire

    • Use untreated wood or natural vegetation. Remove flammable items from near the campfire. Wait until wind dies down before starting or using a campfire. Don't use stoves, lanterns and heaters inside a tent. Keep firefighting items handy, such as a bucket of water.

    Smoking

    • Refrain from smoking while moving within a forest. Keep a 3-foot clearing around the smoker where outdoor smoking is permitted

    Regulations

    • Check local regulations before burning. Some areas impose burning restrictions, permit requirements or may have burn bans during particularly dry times of the year. Permits can outline what may be burned and the allowed distance from forest land where controlled burning can take place.

    Vehicles

    • Make sure vehicles near forest land have proper exhaust systems. Cars, trucks and machinery operated in or near forests may be required to have a special spark prohibter. Don't park on dry grass.
