What Is the Indiana Toll Road Procedure for a Hit Deer?

Indiana residents know that with fall comes deer season. The opening of hunting season coupled with deer mating season means that deer are wandering into places that may be unsafe, including the Indiana Toll Road. Motorists do sometimes hit deer, causing injury and unsafe conditions for other drivers.
  1. If Your Vehicle is Not Damaged

    • Animal carcasses on the road create hazards for other drivers.

If you hit a deer and your vehicle is not damaged and you are able to safely continue, inform any of the toll boot attendants, vendors at the travel plazas or dial 911 from any cellphone. Troopers are trained to watch for animal carcasses that may create driving hazards.

    If Your Vehicle is Damaged

    • Hitting a deer at a high speed can cause significant damage.

If you cannot drive your vehicle, pull over to the right of the lane and turn on your blinkers. Remain in your vehicle, for your safety. Call 911 if you are able, or wait for officer patrols to approach you and offer assistance.

    General Toll Road Emergency Procedures

    • Raise your hood to let others know you need assistance.

Do not try to repair your vehicle if it is not something that you can do quickly and do not attempt to flag down other drivers. Raise your hood to signal vehicular distress and let others know you are in need of assistance. Indiana Toll Road has a two-hour time limit for disabled vehicles.
