Handicapped Travel Resources

Handicapped persons are traveling more than ever, and there are many travel resources available to help them to make their vacation and business trips more enjoyable. The advantages of these resources are that it allows people who are handicapped to better plan their travel itineraries by knowing which countries, cities, hotels and forms of transportation accommodate their particular needs.
  1. Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality

    • The Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality (SATH) was founded in 1976, to promote the needs of handicapped travelers and to work for the removal of barriers to their travels. Individuals, travel professionals, and businesses may become members. SATH maintains a list of resources for travelers with disabilities such as accessible lodgings and resorts; accessible van, RV and scooter rentals and; tour operators and travel agents. Another resource includes an extensive list of books, access guides and brochures. You can view websites, magazines and newsletters for the handicapped traveler, as well as a list of government resources. There's also a comprehensive list of airlines and their policies for customers with disabilities.

    National Center on Accessibility

    • The National Center on Accessibility (NCA) promotes help for and inclusion of handicapped people in parks, recreation and tourism. The center is based at Indiana University and operates in cooperation with the National Park Service. The NCA provides publications and videos that contain the latest information on access to playgrounds, beaches, trails, campgrounds, boating, and fishing. You can subscribe for free to their news listserv that will email you announcements, research findings, technical assistance issues, and other topics related to accessibility in recreation facilities. The NCA also maintains a list of products used for persons with disabilities in recreational activities such as a tent designed for ease of use for the handicapped, fishing assistive devices, and a ball scoop for golfers.

    Alpenglow Adventures

    • Alpenglow Adventures brings together people, who can't walk with those who can, who share a love for hiking. The handicapped person rides in a specially designed cart that is pushed or pulled by one of the foot hikers. Under the guidance of Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, and the Kentucky Easter Seal Society Board of Directors, Alpenglow Adventures takes participants to such places as the Grand Canyon, Machu Picchu in Peru, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, and Havasu Falls in Arizona. The guides on the expeditions are all experienced hikers for the excursion they're leading. Prices for the trips include hotel accommodations for the beginning of the trek, transportation, guides, food, and porters.
